INTO THE RAVINES
My focuses are the ravines and the single-family homes adjacent to them. The single-family homes I chose to study are right beside the ravines, with unique geographic advantages. I see the possibility of creating relationships and engagement between the single-family homes and the ravines. I developed the typology by analyzing and classifying the primary backyard usage of single-family homes.
I categorized them into vegetation, recreation, shed, and undeveloped. Each type has a different percentage of occupations, thus offering different levels of opportunity for future interventions. For the design proposal, my strategy is to create extra living space and enable people to engage with the ravines while using the area. To have part of the backyard still available for other usage and activities, I tried to limit the sizes of the interventions and located them on one side of the backyard.
